The Ku Klux Klan has arrived in Portland in fearful numbers-burning crosses, inciting violence, electing officials, and brutalizing blacks. Pendleton, the stately Mavereen, and the unforgettable club chanteuse Blossom Fontaine, she begins to understand the reason for their dread.
